Eleanor Rickard’s 2084 series offers uncomfortable viewing despite the calm atmosphere it projects. Offering an account of our future in light of the continual environmental damage we wreak, the natural qualities of the landscapes become a world forced back to basics after a period of distress; where once they would symbolise escape. This is not post-apocalypse but the imagined face of a slow decline. In her words

2084 explores the emerging genre of fictive documentary, questioning the nature of the real through a constructed narrative. Working from environmental projections, the series envisions a near future where human intervention has resulted in total animal extinction. Mirroring established traditions in the literary and cinematic worlds, 2084 aims to utilise the photographic medium to enhance awareness of the impact ecological destruction is wreaking on the planet.

Eleanor will be joining our Creative Directory this Saturday, so look out for our interview with her where we will discuss her imagination, motivation and unpaid internships.
