Until the 25th of August, The Barbican celebrates 40 years of French fashion designer, Jean Paul Gaultier in his first major exhibition; The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. In true Gaultier style, the London stop of his exhibition tour comes to life with video projected mannequins, making the ‘models’ interactive and injecting his famous sense of humour into the show.

From Eurotrash to costume to Hermes and haute couture; Gaultier’s career has certainly been colourful and of course extremely well documented. A significant achievement for a man from such humble beginnings. With no formal training, Gaultier began his career by sending sketches to couture stylists. After only 6 short years working as an assistant in Parisian houses, he launched his first collection in 1976. Since then he has gone on to design some of the most iconic garments in the world, including Madonna’s conical corset for her Blond Ambition tour.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is at the Barbican from 9 April 2014 – 25 August 2014. See www.barbican.org.uk for more info.
