Introducing Restaurant Powerhouse: Jason Atherton

Words by Shaun Cooney

Born the son of a hotelier in Sheffield Jason Atherton has hospitality written into his DNA. Training with the Army Catering Corps serving up food for all the units of the British army was the perfect opportunity to learn the ropes. Atherton must be a glutton for being screamed at and could be a reason as to why he decided to join the Ramsey Group in 2001 as executive chef for Verre in Dubai.

Atherton has had an exciting career and can boast a star-studded list of mentors including Gordon Ramsey, Marco Pierre White and Ferran Adria. This mix of cuisines and cooking styles has given Atherton the perfect springboard to launch his global chain of restaurants. Atherton has opened restaurants in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Dubai and London, home to his trio of social houses, Pollen Street Social, Social Eating House and Little Social. Pollen Street Social opened in 2011 and has gone on to win a Michelin star, new restaurant of the year as voted by the Craft Guild of Chefs and number of other awards and commendations.

At the young age of 42 and with 14 restaurants in 5 years and one more to open before the end of this one, it would seem that Jason Atherton is an unstoppable global brand. Atherton said about hard work that “the more effort you put in to your work the more you’re going to get out of it – simple as that”.
