M+ Neon Dreams

When Hong Kong’s new visual culture museum asked for images recording the thousands of neon signs that make the city so iconic, they received over 4,000 submissions. If the streets of London are paved with gold, the streets of Hong Kong are lined with light. New, online exhibition M+ is a tribute to the infamous neons, from the big brights to smaller local works. On top of the immense collection of images, which map the brights across the city, there is material covering subjects as diverse as the making of a sign, to a photo series documenting the declining local businesses that sit under many of the lights. It’s an incredible exhibition, that offers a view into Hong Kong’s visual identity like nothing before.
