Nigeria to Italy

This thought provoking photography series by Elena Perlino uncovers the daily experiences of women trafficked from Nigeria to Italy to work in the sex industry. The number of Nigerians brought over to Italy, with the promise of better jobs and financial reward, is astonishingly high. Pipeline documents the struggles with law enforcement, the isolating conditions of the work, and the community that the girls have built in the face of adversity.  Perlino, who started the series in 2005, states “I decided it was important to enter their world, and show the different sides of their lives. The contradiction of the hard conditions they face, but also the fragments of normality for women that are only twenty years old.” The results offer a sad but important account of a less savoury part of the Italian sex industry.
