Only in England

Only in England: Photographs by Tony Ray-Jones and Martin Parr, shows at the Science Museum’s new Media Center until 16th April.

Martin Parr has become as solid a cultural institution as the themes he photographs. The brilliance of this Science Museum show, is that it brings together Parr with the most perfect of partners in crime, the late Tony Ray-Jones. Both photographers are famed for their depictions of good old-fashioned British recreation, the seaside and Butlins; Ray-Jone’s most famous snaps show the holiday camp beauty competition in all their glamorous naff-ness. There’s something about the involvement of the Science museum that lends itself to the hilarity of some of the images, an anthropology of the working class at play (no more hilarious than the posh at play, mind). The collection exhibits a mixture of Ray-Jone’s images chosen by Parr from the National Media Archive, alongside the little exhibited ‘The Non-Conformists’ by Parr himself, which includes pictures of small communities in the sixties and seventies.
