Redesign: Man About Town

For Ben Reardon’s (ex-editor of i.D and GQ Style) Man About Town debut, the newly appointed editor-in-chief took the anglo-french magazine into a very new direction. Shot by Alasdair McLellan, Brooklyn Beckham followed in the footsteps of his father by gracing the cover in a shoot that illustrated a teenage bedroom; although I’m not sure I’m convinced it’s anything like Beckham juniors real thing.

Whilst I love the cover shoot, I am not so won over by the new graphic, clunky art direction. What was once a classic and elegant magazine, now has clumsy typography in a development of the pretty-ugly trend. The san serif logo is however, more like it’s original design but without the elegant tracking. Trying to be too clever by combining the ‘t’ of about and town, has resulted in an ugly, obtrusive and a little bit phallic looking quirk to the graphic logo.

With a drastic design overhaul every couple of years though, hopefully this look will only last a few more issues.
