17 year old Bridie Monds-Watson was the first musician to be signed to Chvrches new record label; Goodbye Records. A combination of her lyrics about teenage angst and her dusty voice reminds you of her youth, but the level and speed of her success is difficult to comprehend from someone so young. Bridie was just 14 when she broke onto the music scene in her native, Derry, in Ireland. Despite taking influence from a range of artists including folk heroine, Joni Mitchell, The Foals and Pink Floyd, her sound nestles perfectly between folk, alternative and soul. This musical cross-over became the inspiration for her stage name, SOAK; a hybrid of ‘soul’ and ‘folk’, decided on by her and her mother, who was appointed as Bridie’s manager a couple of years ago. After being chosen as Zane Lowe’s favourite track and a headline gig at St. Pancras Old Church, momentum is building quickly. We can expect big things from this young talent.
