VSO Malawi

Words by Josephine Pollard

Volunteer Services Organisation (VSO), International Citizen Service is a UK government funded youth volunteering programme for overseas development work. VSO partners with Progressio for projects that respond to specific help requests where volunteer’s energy and skills make a direct impact to fight poverty, make a sustainable difference through supporting poor and marginalised people, especially women, to empower themselves.

Malawi, is a land locked country in southeast Africa where half the 17 million population live in poverty. It is among the least developed countries and most Malawians rely on subsistence farming prone to

natural disasters putting it in constant need of food aid for survival. Malawi has a low life expectancy, high infant mortality and a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS which kills tens of thousands every year.

In Malawi I will work for three months, from October to December 2014, on rural projects that support people who have been affected with HIV/AIDS and assist in other community building activities. I will document the experience through a journal and photography that will support my future university degree studies and career in world development. In particular the photography will help me share my experience with everyone who has supported me.

My goal is to raise £2000 which will go towards travel, accommodation and basic supplies. Please donate generously at www.justgiving.com/Josephine-Pollard or visit my online shop, bettys.bigcartel.com, to purchase my photographic zine. All sales will be contributed towards this project.
